ICIES News- At the 4th International Conference on Islamic Economics Studies (ICIES) 2024, Ari Widiati, Indah Purnama Sari, and Samsul Hidayat from the State Islamic Institute of Pontianak presented a compelling study titled “Superior Human Resources, Religious Tourism Thrives Towards Sustainable Economic Independence.” Their research underscores the pivotal role that human resources (SDM) play in fostering sustainable economic independence, particularly within the context of religious institutions such as Pesantren Muinul Islam.
The presenters highlighted various training and development programs implemented at Pesantren Muinul Islam, sponsored by Bank Indonesia and other institutions. These initiatives include viticulture training, business bookkeeping, digital promotion, and the development of kelulut honey. Additionally, the pesantren has offered training in fish farming and dairy goat husbandry, equipping students with practical business management skills that contribute significantly to the pesantren’s economy.
Central to the study is the idea that high-quality human resources—characterized by advanced competencies, skills, innovation, creativity, leadership, and cooperation—are crucial for achieving sustainable economic independence. The presenters emphasized that effective leadership and strong collaboration among pesantren administrators and students have created an environment conducive to economic growth, allowing the pesantren to thrive independently and competitively.
Specific training programs, such as the 2020 viticulture course facilitated by Bank Indonesia Kalimantan Barat and the 2021 business unit bookkeeping course, were highlighted as key initiatives that have enhanced the students’ abilities to manage financial resources efficiently. Moreover, the Digital KTI Pesantren training in Makassar, also sponsored by Bank Indonesia, provided skills in digital promotion and media da’wah, further contributing to the economic viability of the pesantren.
The research also focused on the impact of innovation and creativity in developing various business ventures at the pesantren, including grape cultivation, kelulut honey production, goat farming, and fish farming. This diversification has not only minimized financial risks but also significantly increased the pesantren’s income, thereby supporting sustainable economic independence.
Collaboration between the pesantren’s leadership, teachers, staff, and students was identified as a crucial factor in the successful implementation of educational programs, the consistent application of Islamic values, and the maintenance of daily harmony within the pesantren. Partnerships with external entities, such as local communities, regional governments, other educational institutions, and non-profit organizations, have further strengthened the pesantren’s capacity for sustainable development.
In conclusion, the presenters argued that the combination of superior human resources, ethical leadership, and strategic partnerships has enabled Pesantren Muinul Islam to thrive economically while adhering to Islamic principles, serving as a model for other religious institutions aiming to achieve sustainable economic independence.
